He's getting old, having trouble providing for his family, disrespected at work, and to make matters worse he's got lung cancer.

Empathy is key to character development , but beyond that, we have to have someone interesting. Walt is interesting because he's being pushed to the brink. Breaking Bad explores an average person who goes all the way to the edge. We're interested in how our character gets from the opening scene to this point, so the pilot then sets up character moments to show what takes Walt to the edge.

But, in the pilot, Jesse's character was originally named Marion Dupree. I googled for a long time and didn't find an explanation why, but I think Jesse Pinkman is a way better name so I am glad they changed it.

Walt running into Jesse is a total coincidence , but it's one that helps get him into trouble. Think about your character? Who would they see and be with every day? Those people populate their world. Now, who do they run into based on where they are? Your show is only as good as the ending. You want to leave everyone watching wanting more. So how does Breaking Bad end? We're tied to Walter now. He has a secret, one he can never tell. And with that secret comes lies.

Lies Walter tells other people and the lies Walter tells himself. Since the pilot opens with such a bang, it's fitting that it closes with what is a more quiet and personal moment. Walter kisses his wife and makes love to her because he's been reborn. When we opened he was a man ready to die. Now he knows that being alive is better for his family, but he also know the bad things he's doing are truly what turned his life around.

He's always had a caring wife. This little move of the dial clues us into where Walt might be going. Jan 02, Susan Liston rated it really liked it Shelves: movies-theatre-tv , read , own-it. Surprisingly good. If you are fan of the series, of course, this was quite interesting. Focused a lot on the production aspects of the show; music, costumes, set design, cinematography.

And lots of tidbits I hadn't heard before. They changed the location mainly because New Mexico gave them a tax break. Since ABQ became almost a character itself, hard to picture it set in Riverside. Makes me want to go back and rewatch and pay clo Surprisingly good. Makes me want to go back and rewatch and pay closer attention. Oh, and it does contain a lot of spoilers, so don't read this in advance of watching all episodes.

May 17, Paul rated it it was amazing. Mar 08, Leslie rated it did not like it Shelves: books-we-own , read-in I was really hoping to get more from this book, but it fell flat.

I LOVE the series, but seriously, you get more info online and from the imdb trivia than you do this book. The first part summarizes every episode, which was a little tedious. It could have been so much better: behind t I was really hoping to get more from this book, but it fell flat. It could have been so much better: behind the scenes, better photos again, behind the scenes , and just other fun stuff you might see on a documentary or "making of".

It was very interesting getting in-depth looks at behind-the-scenes aspects of the show, specially around design, direction and effects decisions that help build the show's universe. I wish it was more structured though, some pieces of information repeat themselves and reappear again in a way that makes the book flow like an unstructured mish mash of interviews, random anecdotes and essays.

In that sense, I would prefer some of the quotes from interviews to be inserted at points of the essays wh It was very interesting getting in-depth looks at behind-the-scenes aspects of the show, specially around design, direction and effects decisions that help build the show's universe.

In that sense, I would prefer some of the quotes from interviews to be inserted at points of the essays when they would be relevant to enhance the background that was being given. Jun 30, Eric Carzon rated it it was amazing. If you loved breaking bad, you'll love this book.

And it's surprisingly kind of deep for a book of this nature. The show runners really tell you a lot about how they reached certain decisions, it goes into production, lighting, color, music, the characters.

A lot of content, but in great bites, a very easy read. Jul 28, Swayam Khanna rated it really liked it. Amazing insight into the making of one of the best pieces of television in modern times.

Only wish there were more of pre-production documents and floor plans included. Apart from that, excerpts from the writer's room notes, interviews and detailed explanation of character arcs are spot on.

Love the show and love this book! May 21, Miroslav rated it it was amazing. This story is really good! Walter White, is a teacher of chemistry in the high school. He make methamphetamines for many money. He him cancer. Her wife is pregnant. Is the best book. Five Stars. Jun 15, Tony Tower rated it liked it. Pretty pics and some good insights from creator Vince Gilligan. But other than the rather-good introductory essay, the book is pretty slight overall. Aug 01, Ryan Brown rated it it was amazing.

I spotted this book in my local library and really thought that he would like to flip through it, but I wound up reading it from cover to cover. Sure, there were some spoilers for me, but I don't care about that at all.

There is no spoiling for me. I want to know everything about everything, all of the time. The photography is amazing, much like the cinematography on the show. There are lots of insights into the characters, how they were imagined, how they progressed.

If you liked the show, definitely consider looking into the book. Dec 30, Paul rated it really liked it. This was a fun read. It contained a lot of behind-the-scenes facts and stories that were entertaining. The next time I watch the series, I'm going to pay more attention to the episode titles.

The one aspect I didn't like was that there was a lot of summaries of the show. As someone who already watched each episode, I know what happened. That was just repeat info. Oct 06, Mike rated it really liked it.

Fun examination of a brilliant show - not quite as much "behind the scenes" as I would have liked and little too heavy on the thematic analysis, but a super light, fun read for anyone who reserves a special place of honor in their memory for the harrowing journey of Walter White. Jun 24, Dianna Am rated it it was amazing. A lot of really interesting info in this book. The book itself is beautiful and has so many great pictures and details.

As a huge fan of the show I learned a lot about the people who actually made the show and got to see a bit of all the work put into it.
